Do You Spotify?

June 4th, 2010 xsn0w 1 comment

Do you know about Spotify? I have been using it to stream music cleaner and faster than Lala since early last year. If you live in the US, chances are you have no idea what I am talking about. There is apparently only 30,000 American users or less, according to Spotify. Even if there are thirty thousand, this is tiny compared to the amount that would actually use this incredible streaming service if it were widely known and/or officially available to United States citizens. The launch date was supposed to be “late 2009″ but it sort of faded away and since then, nothing  has happened.

Spotify

What Spotify is and why you need it: Spotify is the best streaming music app available on the planet, with high quality sound at nearly instant speeds. It has nearly every song you can think of and also allows you to create playlists and access them anywhere you sign in. With a premium account, you are able to store and access thousands of songs on your device for listening without internet connection. Spotify was designed to look and work like iTunes, and it is intended to attract iTunes users. Official Spotify clients run on Windows, Mac and there are iPhone/Android OS versions. There are also opensource versions built to work for various platforms, and the Xbox.

It turns out that Warner Music label has been the force behind the delay, refusing to grant rights, even after almost all other major labels have agreed.  Spotify is afraid that a launch without access to Warner artists’ music, would fail. Spotify is completely free if you have an invite, with location check, ads and commercials, but the Premium ad free, location indiscriminate version requires a monthly fee of 9.99 Euro and to be set up in a supported country. You can fake the location, but the premium can not be cracked (anymore) as far as I know.

Spotify is based in Sweden, home also to the infamous torrent website The Pirate Bay, and was founded by two entrepreneurs, Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. Most interesting, though, are some of the people involved in developing the program. These include Ludvig Strigeus, creator of the extremely popular Bit Torrent client uTorrent, which has become popular largely due to its small memory footprint – something Spotify definitely shares. Little wonder, then, that Spotify is being touted as the legal alternative to music piracy.

The large library of media is actually a cloud of data, and is stored on a network of servers and also other users’ computers, functioning as a P2P. This hybrid technology really is the future of streaming media. The supported countries each had free open beta accounts available, but unfortunately closed last year, when Spotify for iPhone came out. Before this happened, I used a French proxy to grab a free account. Free accounts are now closed, unless you have an invite, but you will still have to trick Spotify into thinking you are in a supported country. Proxies don’t work anymore, to fake your location, you must use a VPN.

If you can’t get an invite online, through a friend, and can’t register a free account, you can purchase a subscription to use this incredible service. If you do fork over the cash, thankfully Developer Joachim Bengtsson has implemented the “Despotify Library” to create the “Spot” opensource iPhone client. Available on Cydia, this Spotify client will let you access the millions of songs and your unique playlists on your iphone. The official Spotify iPhone app can also be obtained from various sources.

Spotify Search

If you are ready to try out this amazing service, you will need to start by changing your IP to a French, United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands, Spain or Sweden address. The best way to do this for free is to use UltraVPN. On Windows, it is as simple as creating an account, download their OpenVPN based client, install, restart your computer (to open socket Win-32), and log in with your new details.

For Mac, you will need to install Tunnelblick or Viscosity and also download and open a “config file”, like this  one, in the application that you chose, and sign in to UltraVPN.

UltraVPN Logo and Link

When you get connected to UltraVPN, you will be assigned a new IP address. Go to Google, if it shows up in French, it worked! Now you can go to Spotify and create an account and download and install the free client. To view the page in English, go to the address bar and change the “fr” in the URL to “int” and hit enter. If you have a free account, you will need to stay connected to the VPN until Spotify is open and running. Once it is, you can disconnect from UltraVPN as you have already passed the location check and you can return to full bandwidth. You will need to periodically log in to Spotify through the French IP to continue to use the service. If it detects your account is out of country for more than 14 days, it will be shut down, until you connect with UltraVPN again.

If you paid for your subscription, enjoy using Spotify on your iPhone with Spot from Cydia or the official App you obtained. After you set up your account using a French IP, you will not need to use the VPN again.

Bing to replace Google as default search on iDevices??

June 1st, 2010 yoshi No comments

I read on Techcruch that they were discussing the fact that Bing might be the new default search engine on iDevices which is just a rumor right now (thank g-d), but due to the fact that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is rumored to be speaking at the coming WWDC (on June 7th) it sounds like its possible that the rumors are true.

But since these are all rumors I saw on AllthingsD they were saying that Bing is not going to replace Google as the default search engine only that they will add the option for it like they have for “Yahoos” search engine (which you can enable by going to Settings/Safari/Search Engine).

Please tell me what you think if Bing should be the default search engine or are you happy with Google and why would love to hear from you guys,

This is something i think all tech lovers might know and might not with every product created theres always a war literally so most people don’t always notice it at first im gonna break it down as simply and short as i can.

CPU

so you have intel who create cores for almost every computer sold including to days iPhone iPods and prtty much every smartphone availabe in the market then comes apple and says they have a A4 chip that is double the speed and smaller we haven’t yet seen any comeback from intel still waiting for that but till the A4 chip actually hits the market we cant know how good it really is so no winner here.

SMARTPHONES

so blackberry who used to rule this market is now pretty much dead but i myself say they will comeback stronger than before right now though apple rules the market with the iPhone googles’ nexus 1 is a better phone alltogether but then again who cares iPhones got better game play lol but now with the windows phone 7 coming i think apple iPhone 4.0 will have to be perfect and thats the biggest news there.

search engines & email

So you might have heard that twitter and yahoo are ganging up against gmail and buzz well thats not all bing and yahoo search have been working togather for some time to improve there search engines abilities so what it looks like is yahoo wants google out of the market but i think its yahoo feeling the pressure from google.

MAPS

i almost forgot about this apple is starting there own map service and stopping to use google maps on the iPhone iPT and iPad i think that sucks since google maps is the best map service available on the web so again a win for google.

summary

windows 7 phone will be the best smartphone on the market but only for a short amount of time

A4 will be the best processor available (for macs) but i still think its intels win since rumors say intels coming out with a new processor soon that will be better than the A4

best email for social people is gmail and dont know why twitter went with yahoo

best map service is google maps.

hope u enjoyed this post.

[ad#Google Adsense]
I think finally apple is really feeling the pressure the new windows mobile 7 phone is anything that anyone would want in a phone the interface is very attractive with big icons and the Zune HD like interface but better and it has the live updates just like a the Palm OS or Android phone, So now for the applications and build of the homepage so on the top right you have your phone bottom right is text top left is people which is your all in one social networking and contact app that gives you status updates for people you have pinned there and on the bottom left is outlook for your email the browser is Internet explorer not as fast as mobile safari or expected soon opera but still good has multitouch and fm radio, now back to the homepage then under that you have your pictures and then under that is the me for all you info and logins for the social networking and for the gameplay is the XBOX live which will be amazing maybe soon we’ll all be playing Halo 3 on the go (probably in like a year or so) so for the multimedia its video and music together and they have there own store for music i think its in the player might be wrong this is amazing.

Would love one of these phones hopefully they’ll get to israel soon leave comments with questions im sure by the time you read this ill have more info hope this helped you.
