I have been trying to get iFile running on my iPod touch 2g ever since I installed iOS 4. I did some research and found the weirdest fix ever to get an incompatible version working. SHSH For a 2g iPod WTF Apple

According the the Dev Team, Apple has implemented a soft blob SHSH in the iPhone 3g and the iPod Touch 2g. Which means without your SHSH Blobs you will not be able to restore to a 4.0 or later firmware. These blobs can still be bypassed by jailbreaking since the bootrom does not require them only the firmware does.

You will still be able to restore to any 3.x.x based firmware without any problems but any lower version 4.x.x Firmware will have issues unless you use redsn0w (or another means) to jailbreak and get pass the ecid checking.

One of my favorite developers who releases useful software is known as @notcom. He developed the ever-popular “Firmware Umbrella”, now known as “Tiny Umbrella” (A combination of Tiny TSS and Umbrella). The Firmware Umbrella is, well as its name implies, an umbrella of protection on newer iDevices Such as a 3gs, iTouch Mc, iPad, and iPhone 4, allowing you to downgrade to firmware for which your “SHSH” hashes have been saved.

All of these devices have a special feature that Apple has implemented that prevents users from downgrading the normal way in iTunes. With the “ECID” Apple has implemented, it asks Apple’s servers to verify the restore and provide a specific file (the SHSH) that allows iTunes to decrypt the firmware and install. By verifying this way, Apple can guarantee that a older firmware can not be restored to say, an easily exploitable firmware. Luckily there are several ways of getting around this, but all of them are very time sensitive. Read more…
